The Mansion of the Gods is a pretty harsh take on the French "villes nouvelles" of the early 1970s and Asterix and Caesar's Gift appears to be based on the 1974 French presidential election. Later books cast a harsher eye on French politics of the era. I guess you could see a slight sense of French triumphalism (in the sense that the popular protagonists are broadly considered French) but, really, the first few books are essentially catalogues of French regional and European stereotypes for easy jokes ( Asterix and the Banquet probably being the most obvious example, but pretty much any Asterix and the X Culture/Ethnic Group is this.) The series never really stopped this, of course, but the first volumes are notably centered on stereotype poking. Previous AMAs | Previous Roundtables Featuresįeature posts are posted weekly.
